Jamie Mayerfeld (Ph.D., Princeton University) specializes in political
theory and human rights. In his current book project he argues that
constitutional democracy is incomplete unless domestic human rights
institutions are bolted into a system of international guarantees.
In developing this argument, he has published articles on the International
Criminal Court, the origins of the US torture policy, and the justification
of human rights. In the past he has written about nationalism, violent
conflict, and moral theory. His book Suffering and Moral Responsibility
was published in 1999 by Oxford University Press. Mayerfeld has
received fellowships from Columbia Law School, Princeton University,
and the University of Washington Center for the Humanities. He holds
an adjunct position in the Law, Societies & Justice program
and serves as the Seattle campus advisor to the Human Rights Minor.
Mayerfeld has taught courses on the history of political thought,
democratic theory, contemporary theories of justice, nationalism,
human rights law, theories of human rights, and the philosophy of
punishment.
