"Why Political Theory Must Be Pessimistic If
It Is To Be Democratic."
Summary: Democratic theory and democratic practice have often been at
odds with one another. This paper argues that, in order for theory
and practice to be united, we must reimagine what it means for the
people to exist and to exercise power collectively. This, in turn,
will require us to rethink the connection between politics and time and to
reject the optimism with which democracy is often associated.
