Course Description:

In the first part of this course, we will cover topics in contemporary African politics around the themes of state, markets, and society as they relate to state-building and political order, colonization and decolonization, authoritarianism and democratization, poverty and economic development, ethnicity and nationalism, and violence. In the second part of this course, we will explore these topics in-depth through a comparative study of South Africa and Kenya.
