Syllabus Description:

This class speaks to many of the issues that have captivated politicians and citizens during 2020. We discuss capitalism versus socialism, and capitalism versus populism, etc. We cover Democratic Socialism and delve deep into Sweden and other Scandinavian countries that practice this model. We also cover trade protectionism and other policies Trump has adopted since 2017, such as subsidies for agriculture because of the tariffs. Finally, we explore technological innovation and often delve into subjects such as the economics of vaccines.

Indeed, when appropriate, we evaluate all these questions through the lens of the crisis sparked by the COVID 19 virus. What role do capitalism, dictatorship and democracy play in addressing the public health, social, economic and political dimensions of the crisis? How will capitalism, dictatorship and democracy be changed by the crisis?
