Drawing from her 2014 book Steel Closets: Voices of Gay, Lesbian, and Transgender Steelworkers, Anne Balay will discuss why steel mills, and other working class spaces have been inhospitable to queers.  The United Steel Worker's surprising response to this scholarship will then serve as a model for queer activism that is less unevenly distributed than what we have now.

Bio: Anne Balay has used her PhDs in English to fix cars, to write award winning ethnography, and to drive 16 wheelers.  And to teach at several different colleges.
