Winter 2016 Composition and Writing Courses and Support Resources for International/Multilingual Students

Submitted by Caterina Rost on October 28, 2015 - 1:38pm

In Winter 2016, the Expository Writing Program will offer three "MLL" composition courses designed for multilingual students who would like to complete their "C" course in a class with other multilingual students, with a teacher who has expertise in teaching both Composition and TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), typically focusing on topics that include both US and non-US perspectives.  These MLL sections meet the same outcomes, and students fulfill the same requirements, as in any EWP course. Note that add codes are *not* required for any of our MLL sections, but instructors' email addresses are included here and in the time schedule if
students have questions.

  • English 121D (composition: service-learning/social issues) will be taught TuTh 10:30-12:20 (SLN 13983) by Holly Shelton, hshelton@uw.edu
  • English 131C (composition: exposition) will be taught M-Th 10:30-11:20 (SLN 14006) by T.J. Walker, tjwalker@uw.edu
  • English 281A (intermediate expository writing) will be taught MW 12:30-2:20 (SLN 14093) by Bonnie Vidrine, bonniev@uw.edu

Multilingual students in any EWP or IWP composition course may also be interested in signing up for an optional English 115 "MLL Writing Studio," which provides additional support related to American academic culture and language.  In winter quarter, there will be six MLL Studios: English 115 A (TuTh 10:30-11:20; SLN 13976) and 115 B (TuTh 12:30-1:20; SLN 13977), taught by Dan Zhu, danz2@uw.edu; English 115 C (MW 10:30-11:20; SLN 13978) and 115 D (MW 12:30-1:20; SLN 13979) taught by Thuong Pham, thuongpm@uw.edu; and two more sections which are in the process of being added.  These studios close at 10 students.  Instructors' names are listed in the time schedule so students may contact them with questions, but no add codes are required.
