The Political Science Department invites recent graduates to apply for the Sharon Redeker Award for Public Service. Students who have made a meaningful contribution to their community or to public service during their time at the University of Washington can apply for the departmental award.

This award recognizes the achievements of graduating Political Science seniors who have performed exceptional service in internships, service learning, volunteering and/or other forms of public service during their time at the University of Washington. It is named for Sharon Redeker who served as the Political Science Department's Academic Services Director for 15 years. Her commitment to citizenship and public service led her to develop the department's internship and service learning programs.

Political Science majors who graduated in summer 2016, autumn 2016, winter 2017, or who applied to graduate in spring or summer 2017 are welcome to apply at https://catalyst.uw.edu/collectit/dropbox/meroy/38275. Applications are due by Sunday, May 14th, and require two documents:

  1. Personal Statement (include your name and email address). Information that is helpful to the selection committee includes understanding why you value public service, why you chose the organization(s) you work(ed) for, how your work contributed to the community, what you learned through your participation, and the linkages you see to your study of political science. Earning credit for internships or service learning is not required, but if you did earn credit be sure to reference the professors who supervised you.
  2. Resume, including your address, phone number and email address

Public service can be defined in many different ways. Competitive applicants will articulate why they engage in public service, why they chose to serve the community (or communities) they have worked in, and they will reflect on their service in light of what they have studied in political science.

The department expects to notify applicants of its decision in late May.

The Redeker Award for Public Service will be presented to the recipient at the Political Science Convocation, which is on Thursday, June 8th, from 10:00 to 11:30am in the HUB Ballroom.

Any questions about the award and the application can be directed to Political Science Advising at polsadvc@uw.edu or 206-543-1824. Interested students can also stop by the advising office in SMI 215.
