Graduate Students Meredith Loken and Anna Zelenz: Why Do Western Women Join Daesh 

On July 13, 2016, UW Grad Students Meredith Loken and Anna Zelenz, wrote an article for Sustainble Security explaining why western women join ISIS or Daesh. 

While it might be a contradiction for a woman to willing join an organization that oppresses women, an assumption that lead researchers to believe they join them for sexual motivations and a lack of knowledge. Loken and Zelenz emphasis that these women join largely along the same reasons as their male counterparts, for ideological reasons. These ideological reasons are backed up with social isolation for being too islamic from their secular European counterparts and their westernized Muslim counterparts.
