Governor DeSantis and other Republicans recently have declared war against ESG, which stands for “Environmental, Social, and Governance”, due to its prioritization of ideal issues over actual financial returns. ESG pursues decarbonization which may provide benefits around climate change and energy prices in the long-term, yet it poses greater risks among fossil-fuel-dependent communities. Due to these concerns, many climate groups are now cooperating with labor groups to pursue for “just transition”, which supports the policies that will help fossil fuel communities change into a post-carbon economy. Likewise, the authors argue that a rethink of the ESG is needed, to make “E”, “S”, and “G” aims for climate change only.
