Security and Society Summer School

Now in its 9th year, this summer program has provided participants with unique perpectives on security issues in Central Europe and a resume-building experience. The 4-week in-person course is based in Warsaw, with travel to Berlin and Krakow. It is followed by a two-week online research internship with the Terrorism Research Centre. Papers developed during this internship will be published as part of Volume 6 of Security and Society in the Information Age.

The course offers a broad overview of the modern security challenges faced by the countries of Central Europe and more broadly by NATO and the European Union. This year we will focus on the regional and global implications of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, along with the broad topics of war, international law relating to war, and peacebuilding. Other topics include hybrid threats, cybersecurity, and terrorism.

Navigating the Future – Then and Now

This program will travel to four former Soviet republics (Estonia Latvia, Georgia, and Armenia). We will discover why, for instance, the Baltics rapidly advanced into Western society while the Caucasus did not. We will examine how the legacies of Soviet era policies continue to affect economic and social development in these countries. We’ll visit many historical sites and museums as well as contemporary galleries and creative spaces as we seek to understand where these countries are in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
