JSIS 478 E: International Laws and the Challenges of Empire

SLN: 15893

Instructor: Smadar Ben-Natan

Time: Mondays and Wednesdays, 1:30 - 3:20pm

This course offers an introduction to public international law along with a critical inquiry on the challenges of empire and colonialism, namely gross asymmetries in power relations, economic development, domination, and globalization. The post-WWII global order harbors a contradiction between a promise to guarantee self-determination of peoples, protect vulnerable states, and ensure universal human rights on the one hand, and a structure that favors the imperial powers of the past and overlooks the legacies of imperialism and colonialism on the other hand. The course aims for students to understand these contradictions in a wide array of global issues and from various theoretical perspectives, exploring the relationships between law and power, East and West, Global North and Global South. Students will gain tools to conduct independent research and formulate policy recommendations, choosing one of five focus topics: statehood, global health, global security, reparations for colonialism, and accountability for international war crimes.

This JSIS course is offered in partnership with the Global Connections Study Abroad Program.
