Learn Political Organizing with One Fair Wage's Freedom Summer

Submitted by Stephen Dunne on March 2, 2023 - 8:30am

Interested in becoming a stronger political activist and community organizer this summer? Want to join the national movement to raise the minimum wage? Looking to connect with other like-minded student organizers from around the country?

Join One Fair Wage's Freedom Summer!

This summer, One Fair Wage, in partnership with the Food Labor Research Center at UC Berkeley and the UC Berkeley Public Service Center will be sponsoring Freedom Summer, a two-month community organizing training program in Ohio to provide students with real-life experience working in social movements and organizing with low-wage workers.

While in Ohio, students will learn from social movement leaders, elected officials, and celebrity activists. Freedom Summer interns will also receive training in social movements and organizing from experts in the field like One Fair Wage Executive Director Saru Jayaraman, then conduct real-life outreach and organizing work with low-wage workers. All students who complete the program will receive a Freedom Summer Certificate, demonstrating their knowledge of organizing and political activism.

Details:

Freedom Summer 2023 begins on June 1st and ends on July 28th, and takes place in Ohio. Freedom Summer will provide free housing in pre-furnished double rooms with air conditioning at Ohio State University, University of Cincinnati, and Cleveland State University. Interns receive guidance from both off-site mentors and professors who have years of social justice experience, as well as a supervisor at their site. Applications are due by March 31st.

Requirements:

  • Applicants must be current students or recent attendees/graduates of a community college, university or graduate program in the United States. All applicants must be 18 or older.

Hi there,

Writing again to confirm that you were able to share this opportunity with students in your program! Please let me know if there's someone else in your department that I should reach out to instead, a jobs board we could post this to at your school, or if a shorter blurb about the program would be helpful (to put in a newsletter, for example).
