The PWR has a writing studio class, English 115, which is a 2-credit C/NC course designed to give extra support for students in thinking through the language aspect of their writing: grammar, rhetorical choices, understanding complex texts, revision strategies, and ways to navigate cultural and linguistic differences. We recommend that multilingual students in a C or W course this quarter consider taking English 115 alongside their writing course.
We've attached a flyer that you can share with students to give them more information about the class, and below is a brief blurb:
ENGL 115: Writing Studio is a 2-credit (C/NC) course that meets two days a week for 50 minutes. This studio is designed for students who are currently taking an English composition class and who want to continue developing their ability to understand and produce writing for academic purposes. This course specifically focuses on the linguistic aspects of writing by working with you to analyze academic texts in order to learn about writing from them, think critically about your grammatical choices, revise papers rhetorically, and learn how to give and receive valuable feedback. While this course has traditionally been provided as a service to students who self-identify as multilingual and international students, we encourage all students interested in further cultivating their language and revising skills to consider enrolling in this low-stakes studio course.
Because students don't always get information about English 115 even if it would be important or useful for them to enroll in it, we want to encourage you to let your students know about the course during this first week of registration so that students enrolled in a writing course this quarter might consider whether something like this studio would be a good option for them.
Please frame English 115 as an opportunity to build upon students' pre-existing language knowledge—avoiding a deficit approach to students traditionally identified as multilingual. We want to avoid suggestions to take English 115 that are only targeted to students because of their accent/global English use, as well as the negatively racialized connotations that generally accompany such suggestions. We encourage you to promote English 115 to any student you feel would appreciate a class dedicated to experimenting with and thinking critically about language.
