Two great PHIL classes at less than ideal times

Submitted by Stephen Dunne on February 22, 2024 - 3:06pm

There are two fabulous spring philosophy classes that have room for students.

Both courses are TTh 8:30 (Friday quiz sections).

Please encourage your morning people to check them out.

PHIL 118: Persuasion or Manipulation? The Ethics and Psychology of Influence SSc

Instructor: Colin Marshall

Influence is everywhere, from job interviews to social media. When is influence effective? When is it respectful persuasion vs. immoral deception? Is using psychological insight manipulative or just good people skills? How do biases shape persuasion, and how should we navigate them? This course examines the psychology of persuasion through an ethical lens. Assessments focus on real-world applications, helping people improve as persuaders.

PHIL 149: Existentialism and Film A&H/SSc

Instructor: Ian Schnee

What makes life worth living? Is morality just a convenient fiction? What is the nature of the human condition? Is God dead, or just playing hard to get? This course investigates the works of several existentialist philosophers, including Kierkegaard, Dostoevsky, Nietzsche, Beauvoir and Sartre, and uses their works to interpret and analyze the philosophical content of angst-ridden cinema from the French New Wave to BoJack Horseman.

Bonus content for those of you who read to the end of the email -  PHIL 120: Introduction to Logic SSc/NSc, RSN also has plenty of space.  Distinguish teaching awardee (2020)  Ian Schnee is also teaching this course.  He uses an online textbook/workbook that is free for the students in his class and can be previewed here
