The organizers are using various approaches to pursue their climate commitment. They plan to avoid CO2 emissions by “using 95% existing or temporary infrastructure, and by only building facilities that can be used after the Games are over...” New stadiums require a lot of cement and steel, both of which are highly energy intensive. Thus, repurposing existing infrastructure is an excellent way to reduce the game’s climate impact.

Paris’ Mayor Anne Hidalgo aims for carbon-neutral Olympics, an ambitious goal because the previous summer Games emitted an average of 3.5 million tons of CO2.
