As we navigate 2024, a year marked by turbulence and division, it's easy to feel overwhelmed by the challenges of maintaining our own beliefs while respecting those of others. Have you ever found it difficult to bridge the gap with someone whose views differ from yours? Do you wonder if finding common ground is even possible in today's climate? Leaders in our community face these same dilemmas every day. We all grapple with the question: How do we maintain democratic civility and compassion in a time where it feels unwelcome?
This fall quarter, LEAD 298 “2024: Dialogue, Disagreement, and Democracy” sets out to answer these questions and more. Through weekly conversations between Professor Ed Taylor and his guests, students of the course will be able to see how civil conversation comes to be, what constitutes truth and evidence and how we can build bridges across disagreement. LEAD 298 is offered online, with a new video presented each week for students to listen to, reflect upon and model in their real lives. Topics include othering and belonging, war and peace, the 2024 election and more.
