HUMAN RIGHTS MINOR CORE COURSE
Syllabus Description (from Canvas):
Has the international legal system facilitated the achievement of shared goals in protecting human rights? If so, which key components of international human rights law have proven effective? If not, why do states continue to invest in maintaining the system? Why do authoritarian leaders sign human rights treaties—and if such treaties lack enforcement power, why don’t all autocrats sign them?
This course explores the puzzles surrounding international human rights law and practice. Readings include international judicial opinions, treaties, and analyses by human rights organizations and scholars. Final grades will be based on short assignments submitted via Canvas, a take-home midterm exam, and a final research paper.
Catalog Description:
Studies the international human rights movement in its legal and political context. Focuses on institutions which influence, enable, and constrain the international promotion of human rights. Course overlaps with: T LAW 424. Offered: jointly with LSJ 320.
