Syllabus Description (from Canvas):

This course provides a graduate-level introductory overview of the field of international relations. It is designed for Ph.D. students in Political Science preparing to take more specialized course offerings and their comprehensive exams in the field, but other graduate students interested in the topic are welcome. The course is designed to introduce (but not exhaustively cover) key theoretical and empirical debates in the field, using both foundational and contemporary scholarship. Grades will be based on the following components:

  • Participation (20%)
  • Two reviews of readings (20% each, 40% total)
  • Take-home mock comprehensive exam; 2 weeks instead of 1 day to complete (40%)
Catalog Description:
Key theories, concepts, and debates in the study of world politics and international relations. Provides an overview of the field and prepares students for the IR comprehensive exam.
