The estimated cost of the trip is $1,200. There is $200 scholarship abailable for the first 10 students. Students pay $100 for Global Affairs support, airfare, meals, lodging and ground transportation in addition to tuition. We will examine differences and similarities between U.S. and Quebec cities. We will look at current urban issues, layout of cities, urban design, urban growth, problems related to the environment, governmental institution as well as historical, social & cultural factors.
Course can count as I&S. - L ARCH 362/598H Design of Cities, (3) credits, VLPA, MW 9:00-10:30, Gould 322, Prof. Elizabeth Umbanhowar, SLN# 21415, Spring 2017
Cities shape people & people shape cities. Over half of the globe's citizens live in cities and predictions estimate that by 2050, 75% of the population will be urban dwellers - whether by choice or forced displacement. Climate change, economic disparity and opportunity, social change and political upheavals drive much of this migration and designers are at the forefront of responding to how will cities adapt. In this class, we will engage critical ideas and current issues around the representation, nature, function and potential of cities through the lens of landscape: as places of connection, health, refute, imagination and hope, even, or in spite of, complex challenges. "Cityscapes" are not discrete or isolated entities, but part of much larger regional, national and global networks, connected through geography, ecology, culture, infrastructure, economic power, media and technology. What then defines the "city?" What design strategies and approaches makes a "good" city and how do communities contribute to resilient cityscapes? How can design help negotiate competing social values, political agendas and spatial needs in urban landscapes and beyond? - L ARCH 322 Intro. to Planting Design - (3) credits, VLPA, TTh 9:00-10:20, Gould 322, Prof. Iain Robertson, SLN#15790, Spring 2017
- L ARCH 363 Ecological Design and Planning - (3) credits, NW, MW 10:30-11:50, Gould 110, Prof. Ken Yocom, SLN# 15791, Spring 2017
- L ARCH 300 Intro. to Landscape Architecture Studio - (6) credits, VLPA, TTh 11:30-5:40, prerequisite course to apply to BLA, Offered Summer and Autumn
- L ARCH 498A Reading the Elwha: Exploring Social, Cultural and Biophysical Transitions in the Elwha Watershed, on the Olympic Peninsula, (4) credits, July 24th - July 28th, 2017, could count as NW or I&S, Professor Ken Yocom.
