Winter quarter class:  ENVIR 495 D “Environmental Education Field Practicum”

Taught by Tim Billo, Program on the Environment

5 credits

Have you ever wanted to:

  • Try teaching? Improve our educational system?
  • Address issues of justice and inequality in our community?
  • Raise awareness of nature and the environment in school curricula?
  • Provide opportunities for all kids to enjoy nature?

If you answered yes to any of these, then this course is for you.

In this course you will learn and practice creative teaching techniques for outdoor settings. It is also an excellent opportunity for any students interested in outdoor leadership, social justice, youth careers, education reform, child psychology, urban environmental issues, and/or general community service.

This year we are working with one public school and one private school to gain contrasting perspectives on education in Seattle. Roughly half of our sessions will be spent in teaching workshops, some led by members of the community, and the other half will be spent creatively teaching your own lessons to students from our partner schools in local parks. We will also have one field trip to observe professional environmental educators at IslandWood’s environmental education program.

Don’t let the 400-level course number intimidate you. Contact Tim if you have questions! timbillo@uw.edu
