Seattle Met Fall Editorial Internship Opportunity

Submitted by Carolyn C Dapper on

Seattle Met is currently looking for two to three more budding journalists for Seattle Met's internship program for the fall! Fall interns typically start the second week of September; the application deadline for fall interns is August 5, but early applications are encouraged. School credit is available for students who need an immersive internship in a professional setting to fulfill an academic requirement (per school approval, of course). Recent graduates are also eligible for the internship. Applicants should send a cover letter, resume, three references, and writing samples Hayat Norimine at hnorimine@seattlemet.com

While the internship is unpaid, Seattle Met provides a great educational experience for young reporters who want to get their foot in the door. Their interns have gone on to work for a range of local and national outlets, including The Seattle Times, Crosscut, The Stranger, Vice, Time, The Nation, Vanity Fair, and Bloomberg. Three of their previous interns are now on the editorial staff here at Seattle Met.

A full description of the internship is below, but applicants that show an attention to detail, passion and independence, quick learning skills and good writing clips are especially encouraged to apply. Experience with news or politics reporting is a plus. Editorial interns are responsible for:

  • fact-checking;
  • primary research, reporting, and writing for Seattle Met's five blogs (which can include hard news and politics);
  • writing event and business listings;
  • participating in team brainstorms;
  • assisting editors in conceptualizing and/or executing features such as Best Doctors and multimedia projects such as slideshows, audio, and/or video content;
  • assisting with some administrative tasks;
  • working closely with the respective editors of their beat(s);
  • and pitching articles, independently and proactively, in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

Interns who shine at simpler tasks will have the opportunity to contribute to magazine features and/or departments. We want our interns to walk away with strong clips that they have earned. The position requires a minimum of 20 hours a week in four- to five-hour stints between the hours of 8:30am and 5:30pm weekdays.
