Dempsey Startup Competition

The Buerk Center for Entrepreneurship is now accepting applications for the 2019 Dempsey Startup Competition (formerly known as the Business Plan Competition)! Thanks to a generous gift from Neal Dempsey, the Competition has expanded to accept entries from student teams enrolled in colleges and universities in WA, OR, ID and British Columbia!

The deadline to apply is April 8, 2019, and while there is $80,000 of prize money on the line, students will also receive valuable feedback, coaching and advice about their business plan from more than 400 entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, angel investors and community members who will judge this year's competition.

The Buerk Center has assembled a variety of resources that can help student teams prepare to enter the Dempsey Startup Competition.

  • VISIT the Dempsey Startup Competition website for all competition-related information, including a more detailed description of each Round. Students are also encouraged to visit the Buerk Center offices (Dempsey 227) to view examples of successful entries from previous years.
  • REVIEW the judging criteria (scroll down to the Judging Criteria tab) for the Screening Round. This is the criteria the judges will use to evaluate the executive summaries, as well as criteria for all additional competition rounds.
  • WATCH recordings from the Business Plan Practicum, a Winter Quarter course taught by John Zagula, founder of Ignition Capital. This course draws heavily from the experience of local entrepreneurs such as Tom Gosner (DocuSign), Amy Nelson (The Riveter), and Ben Gilbert (Pioneer Square Labs).

  • ASK QUESTIONS! Please contact Sarah Studer (sstuder@uw.edu) with any questions about the Competition.
