The Targeted Learning Communities Program

  • Are you taking a reading- or writing-intensive class?

  • Is English your second, third, or fourth language?

Then consider joining the Targeted Learning Communities (TLC) program. Sign up today!

*Deadline: Sunday, January 12, 2020.*

WHAT WOULD I DO IN A TLC?

TLCs are meant to help you support your classroom learning, combine your personal goals with your academic goals, and create a learning community. If you join a TLC, you'll be paired with 3 to 5 fellow students and one to two tutor-facilitators from our center. You will work together to decode academic and cultural norms, practice language acquisition, and develop collaboration skills. Your group will meet once a week for an hour for the whole quarter

TLCs can cover many topics, including:

  • Reading difficult course texts

  • Participating in class discussions and activities

  • Understanding assignments/feedback

  • Interpreting classroom and cultural norms

  • Finding support services

  • Professional development (resume, cover letters, etc.)

HOW TO JOIN TLC

  1. Fill out this sign-up form.

  2. You will be sent a confirmation email with the dates and times of the TLC orientation. Make sure to confirm your attendance. If you are unable to make the orientation, email the TLC coordinator, Sarvin Mahmoodi, at sarvinm@uw.edu to make other arrangements.

  3. Attend the orientation meeting. This will be held in the second or third week of the quarter. You will meet your tutor-facilitator(s) and other members of your group to select a regular meeting time that fits everyone's schedules.

RECEIVING GEN ST 391 CREDIT

You can receive one GEN ST 391 credit for TLC participation if you are above 10 credits but below 18 credits once the course is added. This is a credit/no credit course. To receive credit for TLC participation:

  • Fill out the sign-up form and indicate that you would like to receive credit.

  • You will be sent a confirmation email with your GEN ST 391 add code. Use this code to register for General Studies 391. Registering for the correct section is very important, so double-check that you are registering for the right SLN. If you are not able to register with the add code you receive, please contact the OWRC at owrc@uw.edu.

  • Attend the orientation meeting. This will be held in the second or third week of the quarter. You will meet your tutor-facilitator(s) and other members of your group to select a regular meeting time that fits everyone's schedules.

  • With your group, build a quarter calendar to accomplish your group goals.

  • Participate in all TLC group meetings after orientation (no meeting during finals week).

  • Participate in at least one writing center session.

  • Write a short mid-quarter and final reflection about your TLC experience.

  • Complete an online survey to provide feedback on your TLC experience.

If you have any questions about TLCs or forming a group, please contact Sarvin at sarvinm@uw.edu.

We look forward to working with you!
