Need help reaching out to UW students - 2020 Census

Submitted by Colleen Park on June 9, 2020 - 3:20pm

Did you know?

The Census tracts which include UW Seattle have some of the lowest Census self-response rates in the entire state of Washington?

  • The Census tract where UW is located has a 3% self-response rate! The State of Washington has an overall response rate of 64.9%.

Why does it matter?

Census data is used to distribute over $675 billion dollars back to our community, including funding for Pell Grants, Direct Student Loans, emergency response, Food Stamps, and more. It also used to determine the number of seats Washington will receive in congress.

Be counted in the 2020 Census to be part of the next 10 years of community funding and student aid:

  • For those living off campus: Respond now at www.2020census.gov. It’s 10 questions and it only takes 10 minutes. Your answers are confidential and protected by law. Respond at the address you had been living prior to any housing changes as a result of COVID-19.
  • For those living in residence halls: Housing and Food Services will respond for you. HFS recently sent you an email asking you to ‘opt-in’ to share your basic information with the Census Bureau. Please opt-in. Remember, your data is safe and protected by law.
  • For International students: You count too! Your voice is important, and your information is protected! Respond now atwww.2020census.gov.
  • For students in Greek Housing: You will be counted at your sorority or fraternity house. The Census Bureau has been in contact with all house presidents to organize a count of each house. Contact your house president for more information.
  • Even if you are unsure whether or not your roommate or housemate has already responded for you, please respond to the Census to ensure your voice is represented.
  • You can respond without a Census ID; just enter the address you had been living at prior to any housing changes as a result of COVID-19.
