Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships for the Study of South Asia

Competition re-opened for AY 2020-21 fellowships

Application Deadline: Friday, August 28, 2020 at 5pm PST

The South Asia Center has re-opened the competition for 2020-21 Academic Year graduate and undergraduate Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships. This is a quick turnaround, especially for obtaining letters of recommendation. Please apply as soon as possible.

Award amounts:

  • Academic Year Graduate: $18,000 tuition, $15,000 living stipend
  • Academic Year Undergraduate: $10,000 tuition, $5,000 living stipend

FLAS fellowships support students from all UW departments and schools in acquiring modern foreign languages and area studies competencies. Applicants must propose a program of study that includes at least 3 credits per quarter in your award language, and at least 3 credits in a South Asia studies course (or a course in which 25% or more of the content is focused on South Asia).

South Asia FLAS fellowships are available for the study of Bengali (Bangla)HindiPersian, and Urdu

Eligibility note: FLAS is open to current and incoming UW students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
