CHSTU 465: Contemporary Chicano Literature

Overview of Chicano literature focusing on 20th century works. After a general introduction to the socio-historical background in which the literary phenomena have unfolded, representative examples of the various genres making-up the general body of Chicano literature will be closely examined (theatre, poetry, narrative).  Authors to be studied include Alurista, Cisneros, Herrera, Hinojosa-Smith, Chávez, Lucero, Montoya, Rivera, Salinas, Valdez, etc.

The course readings are in both English and Spanish. The discussion will be conducted in English but may shift between both languages at times. Students enrolled in SPAN 465 will read texts available in Spanish in the target language; they will also write the midterm and final essays in Spanish. Students enrolled in CHSTU may read the materials and write their papers in either language.
