Yenching Academy program at Peking University - apply for UW nomination

Submitted by Colleen Park on October 7, 2020 - 5:34pm

The application for UW nomination to the Yenching Academy program at Peking University are now open and available for students and alumni in any field of study interested in learning more about China, from both Chinese and international perspectives, through a fully-funded interdisciplinary master’s degree program at Peking University. Please share with students you know who might be interested creating their own learning experience in China. And if this isn’t a fit for you or your students, please disregard with my apologies.

As a partner university, UW is asked to nominate graduating seniors, graduate/professional students and alumni to apply for this competitive international program each year. UW nominees are considered strongly in the international selection process, and several UW grads have participated (read about 2018 grads Caleb Huffman and Tobi Du, and 2019 grad Sneha Indrajit).

US citizenship is not required; students from the US and around the globe may be eligible to apply, including students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. Unfortunately however, PRC passport holders studying at UW are usually not eligible. Under the Chinese Ministry of Education’s requirements, PRC passport holders are eligible for admission if: 1) they are currently enrolled as undergraduates in a Mainland Chinese university; or 2) attend the National Postgraduate Entrance Examination (for more information, please refer to the Peking University Graduate Admissions website.).

Scholarship Support:

The Yenching Academy provides a generous postgraduate scholarship that covers tuition fees, a travel stipend for one round-trip journey between each Scholar's base city and Beijing, accommodations, and living costs on Peking University's campus. The Academy offers a residential program aimed at creating a community of enthusiastic, globally oriented young innovators in the heart of China's top university. Such close proximity to the academic infrastructure of Peking University provides a unique opportunity to participate and fully immerse oneself in the life of the university.

Enrolled international students spend 12 months in residence at the Yenching Academy, with the possibility to extend for a second year. For students from China (including Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan), the program lasts 24 months. Coursework is completed during the fall and spring semesters, and it is supplemented by additional study during the summer. Upon completion of their year in residence, students have up to one more year to finalize projects and defend their thesis. During this period, students in good academic standing may apply for a limited number of Teaching, Research, or Administrative Assistantships. In addition, Dean's Research Grants will be awarded on a bi-annual basis to help fund selected research projects related to China Studies.

The Yenching Academy annually enrolls approximately 125 new students from both Mainland China and abroad, to study, live, and learn together. International students from around the world, including the US, Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan comprise roughly 80% of the student body.
