NEW EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES IN 2021 (flyer attached)

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, study abroad has been suspended indefinitely. We know that when travel becomes safe again, students will be eager to participate in study abroad. However, we recognize that there will be no simple return to “normal,” so we must rethink how to make the most out of the challenges we face.

CHID is excited to offer new study away and online programs to build upon our existing strengths in study abroad. Our first study away program took place in New York City in 2015, and this is a great time to expand on the work we started then. Study away offers many of the same experiential learning opportunities as study abroad, and in fact, they have several advantages:

  • Accessibility. Under the current administration, undocumented students are unable to study abroad. Study away addresses this equity issue, making it possible for more students to participate, including those with work and/or family responsibilities.
  • Affordability. As with study abroad programs, costs vary depending on location, but in general, study away programs are more affordable. Students don’t need to pay for international flights, passports, vaccines, or other major expenses.
  • Sustainability. Air travel is a major source of carbon emissions, and the impacts of climate change fall disproportionately on under-resourced communities—including some of our study abroad destinations. Even as we continue to recognize the value of study abroad, we need to look for new ways to explore global problems in local contexts

CHID has partnered with Omprakash to offer “Widening Circles,” combining online international internships with digital storytelling.

Alongside study away programs, we will resume our study abroad programming when—and only when—it becomes safe to do so, as determined by the university. Although there is much uncertainty about the coming year, we are actively recruiting for Spring Break and Spring programs in 2021. It’s a good idea to apply so that you have the option available—there is zero financial risk to you if your program is unable to run, and you’ll have priority the next time.
