Plenty of open seats in PHIL 120: Intro to Logic

Submitted by Colleen Park on November 22, 2020 - 2:34pm
Being liberated from the need for a lecture hall, we were able to make PHIL 120: Intro to Logic extra-large in the winter and there are still plenty of seats.
Here are a handful of reasons you should encourage your students to sign up for it this quarter (sorry if this is a bit long):
  • The course is being taught by Ian Schnee.   Prof. Schnee was a 2020 Distinguished Teaching Awardee.  He is both enthusiast and innovative.  He spoke at Convocation this year, so new students may recognize him.   Here is a 2-minute video* on the course:
  • The course was designed to be a hybrid, so it should make the transition to being totally remote well.

  • The lectures (sln: 18891) are asynchronous. Sections are synchronous. The lecture time listed is for periodic optional sessions and office hours (students can make appointments if they cannot come to an optional session/office hours).  Assuming we set it up correctly, students should be able to enroll so long as no other course conflicts with their quiz section.  There are lots of open time options from the T/Th quiz sections.
  • The textbook is also entirely online and very low cost ($5 for UW students).  Students can check out the first chapter for free at the link below and I recommend that they do.  For many students logic puzzles and problems are great fun but for others they are a unique form of torture.   A quick review of the puzzles in the first chapter should give students a good idea of how they will fare.
  • As always PHIL 120: Intro to Logic counts for QSR and I&S or NW credit.
