This course traces the long history and trajectory of the Chicanx/Latinx community in the pacific northwest from early explorations along the Washington coast in the 1770s, to contemporary issues in the present day.
This course will also explore local social movements, labor development, demographic shift, and the question of internal and external migration to the region during the post-World War II era. In the words of Ricardo D. Aguilar, former editor of Metamorfosis: The Journal of Northwest Chicano Art and Literature, “We live submerged in a rain bubble full of winter which the sun rarely penetrates. This creates a totally new cosmic environment, strangely different from what we have known before.” It is with this dynamic environment in mind that we explore the history of a community that is closer to the Canadian Borderlands and that carries a rich set of diasporic cultures that are unique in what they offer to the larger tapestry of Chicanx and Latinx experience in the United States.
