The Harry Bridges Center for Labor Studies
invites you to
Career Panel for Social Science Graduate Students
Tuesday, April 20, 2021, 3-4pm
While mired in UW’s academic cocoon you may get the sense that everyone has an advanced degree. Yet, in the non-academic labor market, advanced degree holders—particularly those with PhDs—represent a small and highly valued subset of the workforce. This means graduate students are among the most well-educated members of society, with a variety of marketable strengths and transferable skills. While the number of tenure-track positions at higher-ed institutions continue to decrease, and the COVID-19 pandemic further expedites the decline, careers outside of academia are increasingly of interest and provide rewarding options for graduate students.
Recognizing these ever-expanding and exciting options, the UW Harry Bridges Center for Labor Studies is hosting a virtual career panel with former social science graduate students who have gone on to pursue non-academic careers in labor unions, government, higher-ed institutional or consulting research, nonprofits, finance, and technology. Tune in to hear about their career journeys, learn how they framed their social science graduate school experience for careers in the non-academic labor market, and get insight into how they built their initial career networks outside the hallowed halls of the academy.
