AIS 103 is often very interesting to members of the public (since Summer quarter is open to all), and the instructor is happy to have everyone in the class.
AIS 103 – Native Peoples and Cultures of the Northwest Coast
Summer A term: Charlotte Coté M/T/W/Th 12:00-2:50pm — 5 cr. I&S and DIV. Remote learning with optional in person field trips. Introduction to the cultures and governing structures of indigenous peoples of American Indian and First Nations tribal communities in the North, coastal British Columbia, and Pacific Northwest region as self-determining political actors in a contemporary multicultural and global region. Safety permitting, optional in person learning to include plant walks, a visit to the UW’s Intellectual House, and a hands-on cedar weaving class.
AIS 431 – History of American Indian Education
Summer A term: Dawn Hardison-Stevens M/T/W/Th 3:30-5:40pm — 5 cr. I&S and DIV. Offered as synchronous, remote learning. Traditional and European-introduced methods of schooling, the federal role in Indian education, and contemporary Indian education issues. Special attention to Indian concepts of learning; boarding school education; the role of the Bureau of Indian Affairs; current trends in bilingual and bicultural education for Indians.
