Southeast Asian Pasts and Futures Recruiting Students for 2021-2022! All Students Welcomed to Participate! 3-Credit Course Available!

The Southeast Asian Pasts and Futures (SEAPF), a new Luce-funded Southeast Asian knowledge circle brings together AAPI and first-gen students with diasporic communities to celebrate cultural strength and resilience. With the support of UW faculty and Burke Museum staff, students will design their own projects and curriculum, work directly with objects in the Southeast Asian collections, and build relationships with AAPI knowledge holders in the Puget Sound. Each quarter, students will participate in critical conversations and community-building activities while exploring the field of museum studies and practicing indigenous research methods. They will build important skills in networking, advocacy, and utilizing the resources of an R1-university to help prepare them for graduate studies and to support their own communities. At its heart, this program is about decolonization: of knowledge, institutions, and ourselves. It centers the voices and experiences of students with links to Southeast Asia and re-examines the museum and the university as spaces we may claim and transform. Students will receive small stipends to help cover the costs of participation.

Students can indicate if they want to be involved all year long or only specific quarters (e.g. AUT21, WIN22, or SPR22).  

A 3-credit course is available for students. SEAPF will meet in-person twice a month/bi-weekly at the Burke Museum on Friday from 2:00 – 4:00 PM.  If students are wanting to earn 5-credits, please connect with Dr. Raissa DeSmet to discuss possibilities.  To confirm, there is no application deadline, however participation is on a space available basis.
