AES 440 – History And Memory: Race, Archives, And Afterlives

What is memorialized and archived and what is forgotten? Who produces knowledge and what counts as knowledge? Through historical and cultural studies approaches, this course examines how official and unofficial discourses deal with memory, violence, silence, haunting, history, and subjectivity. Topics may include U.S. empire and war, slavery, and colonialism. Prerequisite: AES 150 or AES 151
Students who have not met the AES prerequisites may contact instructor for an add code if they have taken any other intro courses in GWSS, AIS, AFRAM, CHSTU and AAS.

Contemporary issues in the Chicana movement since the 1940s. Issues range from feminism and Chicana political, educational, and social organizations, to work, family, health, and the arts.
