Contrary to popular understanding, “Asian American” is not merely a box to be checked off on school or job applications. A declaration of radical politics and of pan-ethnic solidarity, Asian American as an identity and a name for body of literature emerged out of Third Worldist movements of the 1960s and ‘70s.
Since then, Asian American literature has continued to evolve and reflect shifting histories and demographics of Asian America. But we will also see that literature does not simply mirror the “real world”; instead, they invite us to reflect on, question, challenge, complicate our understanding of our world and, as literary scholar Kandice Chuh put it, “imagine otherwise.”
