Exploring the Legacy of Crystal LaBeija: Conversations on leadership, Ballroom, and community

Submitted by Stephen Dunne on February 8, 2023 - 4:28pm

Join us on Saturday, February 25, 2023, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. PST at the Samuel E. Kelly Ethnic Cultural Center for an exciting event that explores the legacy of the founder of the Ballroom, Crystal LaBeija. This program gives Black Transwomen the opportunity to share the stories of leaders in their communities who have inspired the world and shed light on the Kiki scene's arts and expressions of liberatory performance.

We have invited three exceptional leaders and guests to participate in this program: Aísha Noir, Mercedes Mulan, and Noelle Juicy. Each individual brings her own unique perspective and wealth of experience to the conversation, and they will be joined by graduate student moderator Dykee Gorrell.

The houses that will be present are the Royal House of Noir, the House of Mulan, the House of Juicy, and the Exclusive House of Lanvin. They will engage in a panel discussion about the complex histories of the ballroom scene, how it came to be aided by the legacy of Crystal LaBeija, and how people can become intentional and accountable leaders while organizing safe spaces for colleagues and community.

This event is a powerful and meaningful opportunity for students, faculty, and staff across the city of Seattle to engage in conversations about Black transwomen's history. Don't miss this chance to connect with Black transwomen from the Kiki ballroom scene and explore their experiences as leaders and their thoughts on the leadership and legacy of Crystal LaBeija.
