UWISC | Ana Arjona | March 3rd | 1:30 pm | Gowen 1a

Submitted by Junhee Park on February 27, 2023 - 1:42pm
Good morning,
I'm writing to remind you all of  the UWISC talk this week on Friday, March 3rd at 1:30pm.  Ana Arjona will be presenting a paper entitled “The Violent Bias in the Study of Civil War.”
Please find Dr. Arjona's paper attached.

The study of civil war often focuses, for obvious reasons, on violence. Yet, civil war is about much more than violence. Although different bodies of work have advanced our understanding of several non-violent aspects of this type of conflict, scholars often equate civil war and violence. Dr. Arjona argues that this conceptual ambiguity is problematic and hinders our understanding of its microfoundations and local dynamics. This project discusses the violent bias of a few influential studies of the Colombian conflict and relies on original data on individuals and communities in conflict zones.

Ph.D. candidate Megan Erickson will serve as discussant.
Dr. Arjona is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at Northwestern University. Her book, Rebelocracy: Social Order in the Colombian Civil War (Cambridge University Press, 2016), was the 2018 recipient of the Conflict Research Society’s Book of the Year Award. With Nelson Kasfir and Zachariah Mampilly, she is also the co-editor of Rebel Governance in Civil War (Cambridge University Press, 2015), which examines rebel governance during civil wars. Dr. Arjona’s research has been published or is forthcoming in American Political Science Review, Journal of Conflict Resolution, Perspectives on Politics, among other outlets. The talk will be from 1:30–3:00pm on Friday, March 3rd in Gowen 1a. If you plan to attend remotely, please use the following Zoom link and password.
