The Pol S / JSIS / LSJ / GWSS Writing Center is now accepting Writing Tutor applications for the 2024-2025 academic year. We invite applications from advanced undergraduates who will have Junior or Senior standing by Autumn 2024 and are majoring in Pol S, JSIS, LSJ, and/or GWSS. We hire tutors with excellent writing skills from diverse backgrounds of both academic training and lived experience. Women, people of color, LGBTQ+, differently abled, and those from other underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply. The application deadline is Sunday, April 14th.
Tutors work one-on-one with students to help them improve their writing, make announcements about the Center to classes, and carry out other administrative tasks.
Writing tutors are classified as hourly academic student employees (see the UAW Academic Student Employees contract for more information). They are appointed for the academic year, from Autumn 2024 to Spring 2025, conditional on satisfactory performance of their duties. Tutors must be available for paid training on Monday, September 23rd, and able to work for all three quarters.
The current pay rate is $20.57 per hour for a minimum of 6 hours per week, or tutors may choose to receive Pol S 499 credit (2 credits per quarter if they do 6 hours per week of tutoring, graded C/NC). Tutors who remain in good standing have the opportunity to be reappointed and continue to work at the Center, should they remain at UW, for the following year.

- One-Page Cover Letter. Include why you are interested in working in the Writing Center; the skills and experiences that you believe would make you an effective tutor; any prior experience with tutoring, teaching, or working with your peers; and what you have learned about the process of writing.
- Writing Sample: An academic paper of at least 5 pages from a course listed or cross listed in one of our four departments.

The Director of the Center, Rutger Ceballos, will interview applicants and will notify them of hiring decisions by the end of Spring Quarter; however, all positions are contingent on funding, which will be finalized in August.
