Research Topic
The goal of this project is to better understand how firearms are relinquished as a component of civil protection orders in Washington State. Firearms can be required to be relinquished through Washington’s civil protection order process, however, there is no empirical understanding of how the use of firearm relinquishment by courts varies across counties.
We are collecting court records from 2023 to measure how often OTSWs and ERPOs were requested, how long it took for petitioners to get relief if a compliance hearing occurred, and how many firearms were temporarily removed as a result of the protection order. By reviewing court records across all 39 Washington counties and translating them into usable data, we can get a complete picture of where firearm relinquishment is being underutilized. With this information, the Alliance will be able to more strategically devote resources and provide technical assistance to help ensure that these life-saving interventions are effectively implemented.
