Thinking about your plans for the coming summer? Consider these great opportunities for study abroad sponsored/co-sponsored by the UW Honors Program. These programs are open to all students from any UW campus, so please invite your students to visit our webpage, reach out to a program lead, and attend an info session to learn more.

Summer A term

 

Honors Ireland: Irish Voices

Catherine Connors (cconners@uw.edu), Classics & Juliana Villegas (villegas@uw.edu), English

  • Explore the vibrant cultural and historical landscapes of Dublin, with excursions to Northern Ireland and Cork.
  • Learn about justice and intergenerational activism related to gender, ethnicity, citizenship, and social status. 
  • Through site visits, guest lectures, class discussions, etc., examine the question: “Who belongs in Ireland, and what does belonging in Ireland mean?”

 

Honors London: Socializing Medicine - Comparing Concepts of Societal Safety Nets

Mara Bann (mbann@uw.edu), Medicine & Tory Brundage (toryb@uw.edu), College of Education

  • Explore “socialized medicine” not only through nursing, pharmacy, health administration, etc. but through broader fields such as history, economics, public policy, and sociology.
  • Consider what role medicine plays within society as you observe, compare, and critique healthcare delivery and outcomes in both the UK and the US with an eye towards equity and justice.

 

Summer B term

 

UWT, UWB, Honors Colombia: The Impacts of Coffee Culture Tourism in Colombia

Ariana Ochoa Camacho (arianao@uw.edu ) SIAS UW Tacoma – Culture, Arts and Communication

  • Experience the realities of what it takes to promote and sustain tourism while gaining hands-on experience on coffee farms and in the heart of tourist activity.
  • Examine the different ways that both Seattle and Colombia are represented within the global coffee economy and tourism compared with the realities of tourism and its impacts in Colombia in the coffee-growing region of Armenia, a UNESCO heritage site. 
  • Collaborate with students at The University of Quindío on related research projects. 

 

Honors Sweden: Art & Activism in the Nordic Region

Kim Kraft (kimkraft@uw.edu) and Lauren Poyer (lpoyer@uw.edu), Scandinavian Studies

  • Explore concepts of art and activism in Sweden and Finland as representatives of the broader Nordic region.
  • Learn through immersive experiences at museums, site visits, interactive workshops, and guest lectures focused on art and activism, plus an introduction to Nordic languages.

 

Early Fall Exploration Seminars

 

Honors, UWB, Program on the Environment: Peru (Deadline Feb 15)

Ursula Valdez (uvaldez@uw.edu), and Tim Billow (timbillo@uw.edu)

  • Research nature and culture in one of the most biodiverse places of the world. In addition to hands-on experience with birds and other taxonomic groups. 
  • Learn from local Indigenous, Mestizo, and other communities about food and agriculture, and the environmental, social, and economic challenges they face in this time of unprecedented change. 

 

Honors & Drama: Rome 

Odai Johnson (odai@uw.edu)

  • Take tours of the city and visit plays, art works, pageants, gladiatorial games and opera, all staged to promote the values of Rome.
  • Consider how Rome fashioned its own identity as the center of power and culture.
