The College of Built Environments has two no-prerequsite undergraduate courses Spring Quarter open to all.


B E 210 A Global History of the Built Environment I (5 credits) SSC/A&H with Salman Rashdi

This course critically examines built environments over time using a global perspective beginning with First Societies through 1st millennium CE. The global perspective encourages thinking about history in a transnational and transgeographical manner. The course is broadly structured around the concept of "time cuts" that allow for comparisons across regions and cultural formations.

B E 498 B Sensing the City (3 credits) with Charles R. Wolfe and Mark Child (poster attached)

This course teaches students how to understand urban landscapes from the perspectives of architects, urban planners, real estate developers, and other professionals through lectures and hands-on exercises (photography, fieldwork, mapping practices, AI exercises). BE 498B explores urban places, the built and natural environments, and how they intersect with social and cultural forces. Relevant topics include: history, geography, anthropology, planning strategies, governance structures, cultural dynamics, social equity, ecological impact and health and well-being.
