Hello!
Interested in learning about the meaning of justice and the methods used in efforts to realize it? Curious about how the politics of rights and legal institutions structure our social life? If so, consider majoring in Law, Societies & Justice! The Law, Societies, and Justice Department offers undergraduate students a dynamic and engaged interdisciplinary liberal arts education focused on law, rights, and justice.
Reminder, NEW: As part of the LSJ curriculum structure shift, the LSJ admissions criteria has also been updated.
To be eligible to apply to the Law, Societies & Justice major (LSJ), students must meet the following prerequisite criteria, including minimum grades and the successful completion of prerequisite coursework.
1. A minimum cumulative UW GPA of no less than 2.5
2. One course from the UW English Composition list (5 credits)
3. LSJ 200*
4. One (1) LSJ 300-level core human rights or law course (see departmental approved listing)**
* The LSJ Department recognizes that there are some students that took LSJ/POL S 363 as opposed to LSJ 200 while preparing for LSJ Admissions following the old curriculum model (the old curriculum model is now being referred to as the purple curriculum). The LSJ Admissions team will allow this exception during the admissions cycles during the 2024-2025 academic year to accommodate this shift.
** The LSJ Department recognizes that under the purple curriculum model, students needed to complete two core courses from separate categories in order to be eligible to apply. Under the gold curriculum model, students now need LSJ 200 and one (1) LSJ 300-level core human rights or law course. This 300-level course can range from the old category structures (i.e. LSJ/POL S 320, LSJ 321/ANTH 323, LSJ 322/JSIS A 324, LSJ 329, LSJ/JSIS B 366, LSJ/POL S 367), however, now also include courses such as LSJ/POL S 327, LSJ/POL S 360, LSJ/POL S 361, and LSJ 375/SOC 372). To review the full listing, please visit the Gold Curriculum Requirements page.
The LSJ major application is now open and accepting submissions, APPLY HERE! Students must submit all application components by the second Friday of the quarter, Friday, October 3rd @ 4:00pm.
