HSTCMP 290 B will be offered with the topic of: “The Messy History of the British Empire, from the American Revolution to Brexit.”
This class explores the history of the British Empire from the American Revolution to the Brexit referendum, examining the British Empire as a precarious institution whose pretensions of global domination were constantly challenged by British citizens and subjects around the world. Through the lives of riotous sailors, escaped slaves, abolitionists, explorers, rebels, refugees, cross-dressers, bandits, soldiers, con-artists, white supremacists, anticolonial theorists, Boy Scouts, and more, we will examine how definitions of Britishness shifted over time and why the British Empire still casts such a long shadow over our world today.
