HEALTH POLICY INTERNSHIP

WASHINGTON ASSOCIATION FOR COMMUNITY HEALTH

The Washington Association for Community health is a private 501(c)(3) membership association formed in 1985. Our mission to strengthen and advocate for Washington’s community health centers as they build healthcare access, innovation, and value. The Association represents Washington’s 27 Community Health Centers (CHCs), which provide comprehensive primary care to medically underserved communities and populations and offer their services to everyone, regardless of ability to pay. The Policy Advocacy team represents CHCs at the state and federal level, participating in all aspects of the legislative and regulatory process to bring quality, affordable health care to underserved communities across the state.

 

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Health Policy Intern will provide critical research, information management, and advocacy support to the Policy Advocacy team, supporting projects that will strengthen CHCs’ ability to advocate for their patients, communities, and programs. 

 

In return, the Health Policy Intern will gain experience in strategic policy development in a membership organization, a better understanding of the political challenges facing the health care safety net, and an in-depth understanding of the state budget and legislative process.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Participates in weekly team meetings, offering information gathered by research into key policy topics.
  • Participates in bi-weekly Legislative Committee meetings.
  • Conducts internet and database research.
  • Writes, edits, and proofreads advocacy materials, including public comment letters, legislative briefing sheets, newsletter or blog bulletins.
  • Attends state legislative hearings and provides summary notes.
  • Participates in legislative planning events and Association Board of Director meetings.

 


EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Pursuing a Master or bachelor’s degree of Public Health, Public Policy, or equivalent degree.
  • Background or demonstrated interest in public health, low-income health care, social services, or public policy preferred.

 


PROFESSIONAL/TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and high attention to detail.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Strong critical thinking and data analysis skills.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Commitment to the mission of community health centers.

 

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

This is a paid internship for 20-30 hours per week for the summer of 2020. Start and end date are negotiable based on class schedules. Compensation is $15 per hour. Ineligible for company health benefits.
