Pol S / JSIS / LSJ / GWSS Writing Center

2024-25 Tutor Application, https://forms.gle/gPoioTjPBYJGbGNX9

Deadline: Wednesday, April 27

The Pol S / JSIS / LSJ / GWSS Writing Center is now accepting writing tutor applications for the 2024-2025 academic year. Tutors work one-on-one with students to help them improve their writing, make announcements about the Center to classes, and carry out other administrative tasks.

To be eligible for a tutoring position, applicants must
  • Have Junior or Senior standing by Autumn 2024
  • Be registered and able to work each quarter of the academic year, through Spring 2025
  • Major in one of our four departments: Political Science; The Jackson School of International Studies; Law, Societies & Justice; Gender, Women & Sexuality Studies.
We hire tutors with excellent writing skills from diverse backgrounds, both academic training and lived experience. All students who meet the eligibility requirements are encouraged to apply, including women, people of color, LGBTQ+, differently abled, and those from other underrepresented groups.

Writing tutors are classified as hourly academic student employees (see the UAW Academic Student Employees contract for more information). They are appointed for the academic year, from Autumn 2024 to Spring 2025, conditional on satisfactory performance of their duties. Tutors must be available for paid training on Monday, September 23rd (time TBA but generally 9am-4pm) and able to work for all three quarters.

The expected pay rate is $20.57 per hour for a minimum of 6 hours per week, or tutors may choose to receive Pol S 499 credit (2 credits per quarter if they tutor for at least 6 hours per week, graded C/NC). Tutors who remain in good standing may be reappointed for the following year should they continue as a student.

Click here to access the application form. It is due by Wednesday, April 27.

As part of their application, applicants must prepare and upload the following documents:

  • One-Page Cover Letter. Include why you are interested in working in the Writing Center; the skills and experiences that you believe would make you an effective tutor; any prior experience with tutoring, teaching, or working with your peers; and what you have learned about the process of writing.
  • Writing Sample: An academic paper of at least 5 pages from a course offered by or cross-listed with one of our four departments.
  • Current Resume
  • Unofficial Transcript (access the PDF in MyUW)

The Director of the Center, Rutger Ceballos, will interview applicants and will notify them of hiring decisions by the end of Spring Quarter; however, all positions are contingent on funding, which will be finalized in August.

We look forward to your applications!
